History

acupuncture pain relief Baltimore

In 1972, H.L. Wen, M.D., a Hong Kong neurosurgeon, discovered that acupuncture could alleviate the symptoms of opiate withdrawal. His method has since been used for detoxification and relapse prevention. In the United States, acupuncture detoxification was first introduced on an outpatient basis in 1974 at Lincoln Hospital, a city facility in the South Bronx area of New York City. By the mid-1980’s, the success of this unique procedure had become so evident that treatment facilities across the United States began incorporating acupuncture into their substance abuse programming.

In 1985, The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was founded to promote education and training of the acudetox protocol. The NADA acronym derives its meaning from the Spanish word “nada” which translates to “nothing” - a reminder that the treatment is a non-pharmaceutical and non-verbal form of health care. This supports the recipient’s cultivation of an inner sense of calm. The treatment eases suffering, provides for serenity and reminds the body of its innate ability to heal and create balance.
